PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform GIS, GPS,
and remote sensing related research projects under limited supervision,
providing a high level of professional service and expertise. Manage
research projects and personnel as required, and interact with clients and
stakeholders while supporting research center communications. Write research
reports, assist in authoring scholarly journal articles, and prepare geospatial
training and educational material for workshops and short courses. Generate
industry and government contacts and leads through direct contact, travel,
and presentations to potential clients. Work with principal investigators
to identify research opportunities, organize and develop project proposals,
formulate a work plan and prepare budgets.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES: Requirement is a PhD degree
in geography, civil engineering, computer science, or other relevant geospatial
discipline and a minimum of one year of fulltime practical experience. An exception
may be granted for applicants with a MasterŐs degree in the above named areas and a
minimum of four years of fulltime work experience. Demonstrated success in research
and development or consulting in the geospatial field as well as management
experience of support personnel are required. Also required is an extensive
knowledge of, and experience with, geographic information systems (GIS), especially
the ESRI ArcGIS and ArcView software products, as well as a strong knowledge of
database management concepts, including use of Microsoft Access. Working experience
with Oracle is a plus. Very strong written and oral communication skills are
expected as the candidate will make visits to funding agencies and give
presentations, prepare technical reports, publications, proposals, as well as work
in an interdisciplinary team environment. The applicant must be able to gain
security clearance.
POSITION TYPE: Research faculty position with the Center for
Geospatial Information Technology at Virginia Tech, located in its Alexandria
facility. This is a restricted, full-time appointment through 2004, with extension
possible if funding is available.
