Virginia's
Secretary of Technology,
George Newstrom,
announced in mid-September
the appointment
of IIIT's
Director, Leonard
Ferrari,
as a Special Assistant
to the Secretary,
to help craft a
coordinated strategy
for increasing the
amount of federal
research funding
to Virginia's colleges,
universities and
industry. Virginia's
Center for Innovative
Technology (CIT)
has been charged
by Newstrom with
achieving this goal,
with the help of
Dr. Ferrari and
Dr. K.C. Das, currently
Director of Virginia's
Office of Science
and Technology,
who was also appointed
Special Assistant.
Calling Ferrari
and Das "undisputed
experts and visionaries
of technology in
the Commonwealth,"
Newstrom said he
wants them "to provide
insight on how CIT
can marshal its
forces to increase
federal R & D funding,
as Virginia is one
of the top states
for technology innovation
in the country."
Dr. Ferrari, Vice-Provost
for Special Initiatives
at Virginia Tech
and Director of
IIIT, will retain
his duties at Virginia
Tech while working
with CIT and the
Secretary. Ferrari
came to Virginia
Tech in 1995 as
head of the Bradley
Department of Electrical
Engineering, a position
he held until his
appointment as Vice-Provost
in 2000.
