Rebecca Scheckler
returned to Virginia
Tech this fall as
a Research Assistant
Professor in Computer
Science, one of
two hires in CS
through IIIT’s program
to recruit new IT
faculty. Dr. Scheckler’s
research concerns
the social effects
of digital technologies,
especially as they
apply to issues
of equity and support
of diversity in
educational settings.
Housed in the department
of computer science
at Blacksburg, she
brings expertise
in Instructional
Technology, Computer
Science, feminist
pedagogies, and
biology.
Dr.
Scheckler, who received
her doctorate in
2000 from Tech’s
Teaching & Learning
Department, recently
completed a post-doctoral
fellowship at Indiana
University where
she studied on-line
communities of practice
for K-12 teachers
adopting inquiry
pedagogies. There
she spent many hours
doing field observations
of teachers adopting
inquiry and learning
how to use online
technologies to
support their work.
She plans to continue
this type of research
in Alexandria and
other Virginia locals
as she begins assessing
the informational
technology needs
of teachers and
students, with a
particular eye toward
encouraging more
diversity in information
technology field.
Dr. Scheckler invites
you to contact her
at rebecca@vt.edu
or by phone at (540)
951-0172 if you
would like to learn
more about or possibly
collaborate in her
research.
